As you being to think about renovating your existing kitchen, or designing one for a new home, you will most likely look around at magazines and websites and maybe even books to generate some ideas. It is helpful to clip or copy pictures and keep them in a folder to bring along to your designer so that he or she can get an idea of your taste and style preferences.

The next step, of course, is choosing a design firm to work with. Three Village Setauket Kitchen & Bath, Inc. is a design/build firm, which means that we hold responsibility for your project from design to completion of the project. We provide design services as well and general project manager services, employing our own team of professional installers which allows us to maintain close control of the project. This allows us to provide you with accurate estimates of what the entire project will cost, not just the cabinetry and appliances. Our team consists of skilled and talented
craftsmen specifically trained for the installation of our cabinetry lines. They are also equipped with skills to perform any additional renovations you may need in conjunction with your kitchen or bath renovation, such as moving existing walls, doors and windows, and finish carpentry such as trim work, custom mantles, etc. Our designers maintain constant communication with our crews to ensure a smooth installation. In addition to the photos of our work in the gallery section of this website, if you visit our showroom, you will see albums of our past projects and you can request references if you need them. Much of our work over the past twenty years has been generated from “word of mouth” advertising, attesting to our respected reputation within the community.

Unlike new construction, per square foot costs are not very useful for most remodeling projects. However, industry professionals have found an interesting correlation between the cost of automobiles and the cost of a kitchen or bath renovation. Over the years, we have noticed that a new kitchen tends to cost about the same as a new car, with interesting parallels among the variations of different models and luxury features of both.
When shopping for your car, your choices range from an economical compact car to a luxury sedan with a few added features, or to a sports car with all available options.
Similarly, when shopping for a new kitchen, the products available to choose from range from economical to luxurious and the price level you choose will often be similar to the price of the car you drive, although this is a general guideline, not a rule. Keep in mind, this is referring to the cost of remodeling the kitchen, and not additional renovation projects such as adding an addition or changing a room configuration.
An important factor to consider, especially if you are financing, is that the kitchen remodel will add substantial value to your home. Studies by various industry associations and national publications have shown that remodeling kitchens and bathrooms provide the best return on investment of any other home improvements, returning 85-100% of your investment as an increase in the value of your home.
So in answer to, “What will it cost,” many factors go into an estimate of how much your kitchen will cost. You can use the automobile analysis as a guide, but your best bet is to visit our showroom and get an estimate.
When you visit our showroom, we will give you a brief tour of our displays and highlight the features of our products for you. We will also discuss your needs and review any information you may have brought with you such as magazine photos of what you like and rough dimensions of the space you are working with. We will be happy to give you a rough estimate of what your project may cost depending upon several factors, including what cabinet finish and style of cabinet you are interested in. If you choose to proceed with us, we will charge a customary design fee of $750 which will entitle you to a complete design package. The design package includes a visit to your home to obtain accurate measurements, working with you during the design process to arrive at a design for your space that suits you, and providing complete detailed drawings of your plan, including floor plan, elevations, and computer generated, three-dimensional color photos of the concept, as well as product specifications. This fee will be taken off the price of cabinetry if you decide to purchase from us.
The designer will discuss different options with you and get a general feel for what you would like to do with the configuration of your space. You will need to make some product choices about cabinet style, color, and any painting or glazing you would
like. You will choose the style of hardware as well as
appliances and flooring you would like to use. This information is necessary for the design process, since these product choices will impact the style of your design and your budget. With this
information, your designer can go to work and plan out a design based on your requests and his talents and expertise. You will be asked to return to our showroom, possibly several times, to review the drafts and make final decisions about product specifications before final drawings are made. This part of the process is critical and depends largely upon your input. You will set the pace for this stage, which can go as quickly or take as long as you would like. We will continue to work on your design until you are completely satisfied. Once you’ve approved the concept, your design package will be prepared. If you decide to purchase your kitchen from us, we will prepare a contract detailing the products to be supplied with a price for cabinets, counters, appliances and installation, and specifying the installation work to be performed. The plans and specifications prepared during the design process are an integral part of this contract. Any construction work or additional renovations such as new sheetrock, flooring and windows will be estimated, and a separate contract will be prepared for those services. Proper planning is essential to the smooth implementation of the design, and your participation in the planning process is crucial.

Upon contract signing, we will be able to give you an estimate of the start date based on our cabinet delivery times and our own scheduling of our crews. A typical kitchen renovation project takes about 4-5 weeks (after the work begins), but this will vary based on how much additional construction work is necessary, and other factors such as product delivery delays and unforeseen events. As the time approaches, we will be able to give you a more firm time frame for starting your project. We will contact you prior to commencement of the job to coordinate with you for the delivery of a dumpster for demolition, as well as for the delivery of cabinets and appliances or fixtures. Upon commencement of the job, our crew will take care to protect the rest of your home during the demolition stage, by screening off the work area and protecting any floors that will remain with drop-clothes. The crew will leave a broom-swept worksite at the end of each day and be sure to take all trash to the dumpster daily. Generally, all construction work and repairs or replacements of walls, floors, doors and windows is done before the cabinet installation begins. Finally cabinets are installed and counters are placed, and appliances and/or fixtures are installed and hooked up. The last stage of the installation process in a kitchen is the backsplash. For a bath renovation, the final stage is usually the installation of a custom glass shower door. A project reaches the phase of being “substantially complete” when the room is able to be used for its intended purpose, and all appliances and fixtures are working. Once the project is substantially complete, we will walk through with you and prepare a “punch list” of items still needing attention or correction. Once these items have been cleared, final payment is due as per the contract.
